Crop only transparent area from PNG?

Hi,
We're dealing with images which may or may not have a transparent background. We want to crop to content, which the trim effect is doing. The problem arises when an image does not have a transparent background, but instead has a square element at the border. The result is we're losing image data when in reality we'd want nothing cropped.

Example:

Notice how the 2nd image has lost the blue padding underneath the text.
