e_improve on vector-style bitmaps

We apply our image transforms on the client-side, the source requested from an API.

When no image is available, the API is sending a "no photo" image, which should look like this:

...but because the transforms are applied on the client-side, and the client has no awareness of if an item has a photo or not, so it applies e_improve. Here's the result:

Any ideas for a workaround that does not involve tweaking the API?
